So much for the bitter pill! Not only aspirin, the world’s most well-known painkiller, is produced in Saxony-Anhalt. With more than a billion euros in turnover, the pharmaceutical industry in this part of the world is the most important investor in the healthcare industry. The largest producer, IDT Biologika from Dessau-Roßlau, has specialised in the biotechnological production of vaccines and pharmaceuticals.
Operate precisely without large wounds – researchers and physicians from the STIMULATE research campus are getting closer and closer to this goal. Saxony-Anhalt is adopting a pioneering role in the development of image-guided, minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic methods. The state-wide “Medical Technology Cluster” is also contributing to the fact that more and more innovation drivers are able to settle and grow in a healthy manner.
Researchers from Halle have devoted their efforts to no less than curing Alzheimer’s disease. Probiodrug AG has already created an international sensation with their work. Scil Proteins Produktions GmbH also produces active pharmaceutical ingredients of microbiological origin in the city on the Saale River. The so-called “red biotechnology” sector already has a dozen companies.
Gatersleben is the centre of “green biotechnology” in Saxony-Anhalt to this day. Traditionally rooted in plant research, the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK) came into being here. About 35 million euros have flowed into 150 scientific projects here.
An international team of researchers at the Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry (IPB) in Halle is investigating how plants interact with their environment by means of natural substances. These findings flow into plant production, biotechnology and the development of medicines.
