Spa in the steel works

Anyone who lays eyes on the old administrative building of the former Thale ironworks is impressed. The observer cannot evade the charm of the façade furnished with putti cherubs and ornaments. The entrance hall panelled with marble, which covers three stories, is also in keeping with the grand status. The interior rooms feature a lofty ceiling height of a good four metres.

This is a site that offers the ideal conditions for setting up a small but sophisticated boutique hotel here. In particular, older active holidaymakers who appreciate the idyllic and upscale ambience could be appealed to here, where mountains of files as tall as a man were once dealt with. A series of services, such as massages, a visit to the neighbouring saltwater spa or the in-house sauna, could sweeten the stay for the guest. Or one could retreat to one of the 40 cosy rooms and suites and enjoy the view of the adjacent park. A gap in the market would also be bridged by opening a four-star boutique hotel in Thale.

This is shown by a feasibility study conducted by AB Raymann GmbH (Berlin), which examined the building on behalf of the Investment and Marketing Corporation Saxony-Anhalt (IMB). The building, which was erected in 1912, encompasses an area of 965 square metres and is located on the former grounds of the ironworks. With a plot size of 2,465 square metres, the grounds offer diverse possibilities for use. In the surrounding area, small museums, hiking trails, the cable car and the thermal spa of Thale ensure a varied daily routine. Places of interest in Quedlinburg, Goslar and Wernigerode are easily accessible. In the building itself, there is even space for lounges, a café and a library. The cellar could be converted into appealing treatment rooms. The in-house kitchen could provide residents with delicious and healthy delicacies around the clock.

According to the survey, however, the magnificent building is in poor condition. The refurbishment costs are estimated to be high. Furthermore, adjacent and still operational warehouses and business operations would have to be relocated and demolished. Planned green spaces around the building also have to be newly designed and the access roads have to be modernised. The city of Thale knows the situation and has promised support. If these hurdles are overcome, this luxurious boutique hotel could quickly develop into a popular recreational resort in the Harz region.

Thale is an idyllic city in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt. The famous Bodetal (Bode Gorge), just 500 metres away from the building, starts above Thale. Thale is well-known for the Hubertusquelle (St. Hubert’s mineral spring) with its water containing radon. The Roßtrappe crag, the Bode Gorge and the “Harz Witches’ Trail” are located in the immediate vicinity. The Bode Gorge holiday region is under development and currently features white-water canoe trips, rock climbing tours and mountain bike routes.

Four kilometres to the north, Thale is connected with the new four-lane federal highway B 6n. The A 14 motorway is accessible 52 kilometres to the east. The A 395 motorway is the same distance away to the west. The Berlin-Schönefeld International Airport is accessible in 120 minutes; the Leipzig-Halle Airport in 90 minutes.
