German region for pharmaceuticals, Saxony-Anhalt: 20 companies at the CPhI 2018 in Madrid

The pharmaceuticals industry in Saxony-Anhalt remains on track for growth and internationalisation

Magdeburg / Madrid. As part of a joint presentation of countries at booth 1G82 in hall H1 together with the companies Heppe Medical Chitosan GmbH, world market leader for high-quality Chitosan, and Wessling GmbH, one of the leading consulting, testing and analytics companies in Europe, IMG – the Investment and Marketing Corporation Saxony-Anhalt – will be presenting Saxony-Anhalt as a location for the life sciences industry. The focus will be on the outstanding interdisciplinary working conditions and research activities in the federal state.

"Saxony-Anhalt remains an exceptionally interesting location for the pharmaceuticals industry as well as for the high-tech supply companies from the area of fine chemicals. The expansionary investments at the Serumwerk in Bernburg for example, the companies Pharma Wernigerode GmbH, IDT Biologika GmbH, Merz Pharma GmbH in Dessau or Oncotec Pharma Produktion GmbH, and also the steady growth of industry giants such as Bayer in Bitterfeld or the subsidiary of Sandoz, Salutas Pharma in Barleben are convincing proof that these locations are internationally competitive – despite the high development costs which the industry has to contend with at the international level," highlights Thomas Einsfelder, Managing Director of IMG – Investment and Marketing Corporation Saxony-Anhalt.

A quick glance at the figures shows that the healthcare sector in the federal state is thriving: in 2017, its gross value added increased by 3.5 percent, accounting for 12.3 percent of the total gross value added in Saxony-Anhalt. "At the CPhI in Madrid, we want to invite additional partners to benefit from the location factors in Saxony-Anhalt together with the businesses and research institutes that are already here," explains Einsfelder.

The location of Saxony-Anhalt offers the best conditions for pharmaceuticals companies. The federal state boasts an established pharmaceuticals and vaccines industry, it is the birthplace of homoeopathy, it has a long tradition as a location for the chemicals industry, it is home to research companies, manufacturing locations and institutes of higher education which cooperate hand-in-hand along the entire value chain, and it also has high-performance clusters and networks: it is this mix that makes Saxony-Anhalt so successful as a location for the pharmaceuticals industry.

At the same time, the key focus will be on three factors in Madrid.

Due to its long standing tradition as a location for the chemicals industry, Saxony-Anhalt has become established as an important centre of expertise in the field of fine chemicals in Germany. With the businesses and research institutes in Saxony-Anhalt, highly specialised know-how is concentrated here. In the form of 4chiral, a unique network of manufacturers of speciality and fine chemicals as well as scientific institutions also exists.

Pharmaceuticals companies find excellent conditions for both location and expansion in Saxony-Anhalt thanks to the close cooperation between the worlds of industry and science. Specialist industry parks such as the BioPharmaPark Dessau offer services to companies from the pharmaceuticals sector that help them to focus on their core area of business. The BioPharmaPark Dessau is home to pharmaceuticals companies which don’t just benefit from the specialist infrastructure and service network that are on offer at the location. The close proximity between the businesses also results in synergies – which range from the production of pharmaceuticals, to their packaging, through to research and development. The state-of-the-art location – situated 90 kilometres south of Berlin and 60 kilometres north of Leipzig – has developed into a global centre for pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. The businesses that are based here have considerable expertise in the production and packaging of pharmaceuticals, in innovative vaccine technology, in quality control and compliance, as well as in research and development. In addition to the synergies that they make use of here, the companies also benefit from a highly efficient production infrastructure.

A specialist infrastructure and funding structure in Saxony-Anhalt supports entrepreneurs in the area of pharmaceuticals – at the Weinberg Campus, for example, the second biggest technology park in eastern Germany – to network with the worlds of science and business, providing companies with the optimum start-up conditions: that’s the success concept of the Weinberg Campus technology park in Halle (Saale). It is now the biggest location for innovations in the life sciences and material sciences sector in Central Germany. More than 70 companies and institutes, facilities, and service providers from the areas of biotechnology, biomedicine, environmental and medical technology, nanotechnology and IT have made the technology park their home. In an almost unique spatial proximity, businesses and the scientific institutes of the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg, the research institutes of the Max-Planck and Fraunhofer Societies, as well as the Leibniz and Helmholtz Associations work together on a single campus. As well as 5,500 workers, the campus also has some 7,500 students.
