Food Retailers from Austria construct new Logistics Centre in Magdeburg at a Cost of 17 million Euros

During the press conference on 11.10.10, in which the new investment was presented, economics minister Dr. Reiner Haseloff said, “The central location and outstanding transport infrastructure make Saxony-Anhalt a top location for logistics companies. The carriers in Saxony-Anhalt are linked together optimally, there is enough settlement space and many approval procedures are dealt with more quickly than in other regions. In addition, the state offers first-class subsidy policies. These site advantages have also convinced Gunz Warenhandels GmbH.”

This was emphasised by managing directors Helmut and Werner Gunz, “The new distribution centre is the largest investment of our company to date. With our new warehouse, we want to be closer to our customers and suppliers. In terms of today, this means a major saving on truck journeys; in addition, we are able to reduce delivery times for our customers in Eastern and Northern Germany to 24 hours in the future. A particular advantage of Magdeburg is the Hanse Harbour, which is establishing itself increasingly as the Hinterland hub of German seaports, as the largest inland harbour in Eastern Germany. The waterway to Hamburg is particularly important for us.”

This was also emphasised by Rainer Nitsche, the appointed spokesperson for economy, tourism and regional cooperation in the city of Magdeburg, “The investment of Gunz proves that the industrial and logistics centre of Rothensee can establish itself in the international geographic competition, with its optimal water, railway and road connections. The Federal State capital will continue to strengthen its international destination marketing in the coming years.”

Dr. Carlhans Uhle, managing director of Investitions- und Marketinggesellschaft mbH of the state (IMG), explained, “The decision by Gunz Warenhandels GmbH to choose the site of Magdeburg makes us very happy. In this context, I would also like to express my thanks for the outstanding cooperation with Germany Trade and Invest – Gesellschaft für Außenwirtschaft und Standortmarketing mbH – and the city of Magdeburg.”
