Urban redevelopment – the chance for the future

This not only means a large-scale promotional programme. Urban redevelopment above all stands for the change to develop sustainable forms of housing and living, and to strengthen the inner city and areas near the inner city. Urban redevelopment is the term for an innovative urban development policy whose goal is to safeguard the city’s sustainability in light of rapidly changing framework conditions. Urban redevelopment then functions if citizens, housing associations, private owners and city actively and collectively shape the transformation process.

The theme of our talk is: "Immobilien ahoi! Erfolgreiche Standort- und Immobilienentwicklung im Hafenbereich der Landeshauptstadt Magdeburg" (“Real estate ahoy! Successful location and real estate development in the harbour area of the State Capital Magdeburg”). The event will take place on 1 October 2010 at 3 pm at the stand for the State Capital Magdeburg: Halle C, Stand 240.

In particular, in our presentation we will address the following settlements already effected:

  • Denkfabrik
  • Virtual Development and Training Centre (VDTC)
  • Elbe Office, etc.

Among the participants in our talk are: our managing partner Dr. Wulff Aengevelt, State Capital Magdeburg, Department of Economic Affairs, Tourism and Regional Cooperation, Mr. Rainer Nitsche, economic deputies as well as KGE Kommunalgrund GmbH,  Ass. Hans-Joachim Bartsch. Moderation will be carried out by Ms. Kerstin Palzer.

The Denkfabrik in the Magdeburg Science Harbour was inaugurated on 27 December 2007 in the presence of Lord Mayor Dr. Lutz Trümper and Saxony-Anhalt’s Minister of Economic Affairs and Employment, Dr. Rainer Haseloff.

Located directly alongside the Elbe River in the middle of the state capital Magdeburg and in the immediate vicinity of the university and scientific institutes, an area in the historic commercial harbour is provided with a new urban development function. A diverse, lively urban quarter situated on the Elbe and harbour will emerge as a centre for innovation and transfer of knowledge with further areas for residential utilisations, services, leisure time and tourism. The southern part of the harbour has already been infrastructurally developed. Innovative enterprises and research institutions shall find a new location in the future “Science Harbour”.

Harbours are locations replete with dynamics and change. One sets off from them to discover new things. This also applied to the Magdeburg commercial harbour over the course of a hundred years.

Located directly alongside the Elbe River in the middle of the city, it has lost its original function. But its flair and tradition shall be retained. The “Science Harbour” emerging from the former commercial harbour will thereby emerge as a “centre for innovation and transfer of knowledge”, a diverse, lively urban quarter with areas for science and commerce, habitation and services, leisure time and tourism.
