Q-Cells SE to focus on quality and innovation at PVSEC

Laser marking of solar cells opens up new opportunities in quality control

Q-Cells has explored methods of marking solar cells for a number of years now, and the company’s engineers have now succeeded in developing a production-ready laser-supported process for coding each individual solar cell. A European patent entitled “Solar Cell Marking Procedure and Solar Cell” has been issued for the laser marking technology. Q-Cells will offer to potential customers, at fair and reasonable terms, the proprietary rights secured during the development phase for their own use. The process, which Q-Cells states will be fully implemented by the end of year, opens up entirely new ways of tracking and optimizing the products. Key parameters, such as the delivery date of the raw material, supplier ID and the labelling of consumables used in the manufacturing process can be saved and assigned to each solar cell. For customers this means a significant improvement in quality of each and every cell in a given module.

Benefits through higher quality and cost savings

The digital marking of each individual solar cell allows end-to-end tracking across large sections of the photovoltaics value chain – from silicon raw wafers to solar modules and systems. Never before has it been possible to track the production steps in such detail. The process increases the transparency of each step, thereby enabling employees to know exactly which raw materials and manufacturing processes were used, which can in turn contribute significantly to product stability. In conjunction with laser marking, continuous process optimization will help cut costs and promote the development of new technology in the solar industry.

Innovative and application-oriented product portfolio

Alongside innovations for solar cells, Q-Cells will exhibit its model “solar house” to demonstrate the full breadth of its product range, including applications for slanted roofs, flat roofs, façades and groundmounted systems. With the Q.PRO, Q.BASE and Q.SMART product range, Q-Cells offers a variety of tailormade solutions for any application. Visitors can also learn more about Q-Cells’ systems expertise in medium-scale projects for commercial and industrial clients, as well as for large-scale solar parks. Highquality crystalline solar cells will round off the product portfolio on display. With its strong showing at the PVSEC, Q-Cells will emphasize its strategic transformation from a pure solar cells manufacturer to a provider of integrated photovoltaic solutions.
