The Pharmaceutical Industry in Saxony-Anhalt is booming

Manufacturers of such self-administered medications include Bayer Bitterfeld GmbH, which plans to invest millions more in its Eastern German site in Bitterfeld, Saxony-Anhalt. By the end of 2010, Bayer Bitterfeld will have invested €7 million (US$8.9 million) in its facility in a 128-acre (52-hectare) industrial park. "Current forecasts show that this target will probably be increased over the course of the year," says Bayer Manager Christian Schleicher. Investments of €25 million ($32 million) are planned for the site.

The pharmaceutical industry in Saxony-Anhalt has a long tradition. Companies range from subsidiaries of global concerns to pharmaceutical companies with a decades-old presence in the state to modern biotechnology companies. One of the latter is Biologika Dessau GmbH, the only German company supplying the U.S. and the American government with vaccines. The company won an award in 2008 for operational excellence. Motivated employees, the lowest unit labor costs in Germany and a stable, secure legal system ensure pharmaceutical companies of all sizes a decisive, competitive advantage. Saxony-Anhalt’s central location in Europe also guarantees pharmaceutical industry investors optimum access to the established markets of Western Europe and the emerging markets of Eastern Europe.
