Merz expands its Dessau site and adds a new production line

On September 7, the 20th anniversary of the establishment of its plant at the BioPharmaPark Dessau, Merz presented its latest expansion measures. It has invested around 40 million euros in a new state-of-the-art filling plant with isolator technology and a multi-functional building. More than 50 new jobs will be created at the site.

Stefanie Pötzsch, State Secretary at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Tourism, Agriculture and Forestry in Saxony-Anhalt, said in advance of the event: “Saxony-Anhalt is a modern, up-and-coming location for the national and international pharmaceutical industry. The BioPharmaPark Dessau – one of the 12 Centers of Excellence in the region – provides the ideal conditions for the ongoing growth of the company."

Philip Burchard, CEO of the Merz Group and Chairman of the Shareholders Council, added: "Our 20 years in Dessau are a success story for Merz and for the location. We manufacture products in Dessau that are in demand throughout the world. We are proud of what we have achieved and we are looking forward with confidence to the future."

The Merz Group consists of five business units: Merz Aesthetics, Merz Therapeutics, Merz Consumer Care, Merz Immobilien and Financial Investments. Merz has been manufacturing high-quality aesthetic and neurological products at the BioPharmaPark Dessau Center of Excellence since 2002. Following the expansion measures, the company is focusing its production on its best-selling products, such as Xeomin, which is used for neurological movement disorders, and Bocouture, a product for aesthetic medicine.

Merz is also working on safeguarding its existing and future workforce at its Dessau site and has recently launched a joint project with CWW GmbH in Dessau-Roßlau and the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation IFF in Magdeburg on the subject of smart work. This involves a modern, flexible work concept that will increase the self-determination of employees and their enjoyment of their jobs and allow new skilled staff to be recruited.

Site manager Björn Niemczak explained: "The combination of experience and a dynamic, passionate approach to work, plus identification with the product and our site, form the basis for the impressive growth of Merz at the BioPharmaPark Dessau. Now it is crucial for us to design the appropriate types of workplaces and create the right conditions that will allow us to offer attractive jobs to all generations in the future. Our goal is to continue making the best possible use of the combination of inspiration and experience for the ongoing development of the site."
