REWE Group plans new logistics centre in Magdeburg

High investments in the expansion of logistics- REWE Group plans total of seven new warehouses by 2025

The logistics centre in Rothensee, Magdeburg, will be constructed on an area of 15 hectares by 2020 - two new halls are planned with a size of 42,000 and 30,000 square metres. 250 new jobs are to be created initially, with a further 400 to be created later.

The REWE Group is planning a far-reaching expansion of its logistics capacities by 2025. This information was communicated in Cologne today by Frank Wiemer, a member of the board of management of the REWE Group who is responsible for areas including logistics. “The dynamic growth of our food business requires additional warehouses throughout Germany,” said Wiemer. “Without a new logistics offensive, we would meet capacity limits in the medium term. This would impact negatively both on our cost structures and on the quality of the logistical services for our markets. Therefore, the Board of Management and the Supervisory Board members of the REWE Group agree that we will initially invest about 600 million in the next four years.”

The construction of a total of seven new logistics centres is planned in the next eight years, these being required mainly for REWE’s supermarket business. “With this we are also pushing forward vigorously with the automation of our logistics,” says Wiemer. “We have gained extensive experience with automation with our logistics centre in Neu-Isenburg. On this basis, we can now tackle a targeted measure of automation of the new warehouses. In the process, we will also lay the foundations for the later use of robots where this will become necessary.”

The warehouse projects in Henstedt-Ulzburg (North region) and Wölfersheim (Central region) as well as in Magdeburg are part of the expansion of REWE’s logistics structures. In Magdeburg, a new national central warehouse for shelf stable food is to be set up. To this end, the planning for the development of a plot in the Magdeburg Rothensee industry and logistics centre have begun, with the active support of the state capital of Magdeburg.

The opening of these three warehouses alone will create a total of around 700 new jobs in the REWE logistics department. Additionally, these warehouses will be designed in accordance with the newest knowledge obtained in the field of ergonomics and preventative occupational safety.
