Building distributor Saint-Gobain invests EUR 34 m

Logistics centre in Sülzetal: Minister hands over EUR 4.7 m funding

Willingmann: Saxony-Anhalt convinces as a location

Economic thunderbolt for the community of Sülzetal (administrative district of Börde): building distributor Saint-Gobain Building Distribution Deutschland GmbH (SGBDD) is setting up a new logistics centre in the district of Osterweddingen. The investment, amounting to a good EUR 34 million, is being supported by the state of Saxony-Anhalt with approximately EUR 4.7 million from the joint task for the “Improvement of the Regional Economic Structure” (GRW). Minister Prof Armin Willingmann handed the funding approval over to managing director Knut Söller today.

Willingmann emphasised: “Saxony-Anhalt is convincing an increasing number of investors with excellent conditions as a location and attractive funding conditions. In 2017, we provided funding for more corporate investments than in the last four years. The fact that international groups such as Saint Gobain are also focusing on Saxony-Anhalt as a location for business is positive news for the people and a strong signal for the ability of our state to continue to prosper into the future.” He said that state funding was fundamentally orientated towards the creation of innovative jobs. “In addition, however, we also need jobs for less qualified people and the long-term unemployed. Investments in new logistics centres offer genuine opportunities for them in particular,” said the minister.

Söller thanked the minister and added: “We are convinced of the advantages of the central location. Our aim is always to offer our customers the best possible services. The new, modern logistics centre that will be built in Osterweddingen will enable us to supply our branches throughout Germany in optimal fashion. In this way, not only can our requirements with regard to additional space be fulfilled, but modern, digital processes for improving our supply chain can also be implemented.”

With the investment, Saint-Gobain Building Distribution Deutschland GmbH is merging its business premises in Halle and Magdeburg. The approximately 120 employees can work at the new location; an additional 19 jobs are also being created. From the logistics centre, all German branches of the company are to be supplied with tiling articles, high articles and expansion articles as well as construction equipment and tools. Saint-Gobain Building Distribution Deutschland GmbH is part of the French building materials group Compagnie de Saint-Gobain, which, according to its own figures, employees around 170,000 people in 67 countries.
