Mansfelder Land Lake District. Stefanie Pötzsch, State Secretary at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Tourism, Agriculture, and Forestry, today presented the Mansfeld-Südharz district with three grant notifications at Süßen See for the development of the Kupferspuren Bike Trail. This brings the total funding available to 14.8 million euros from federal and state funds under the Coal Regions Investment Act, which will be used to further develop the tourism infrastructure in three sections (North, East, and West), close gaps in the network, and install standardized signage.
State Secretary Stefanie Pötzsch said: “Anyone cycling along the Kupferspuren Bike Trail can experience the history and beauty of the region in a special way. The route combines mining tradition, impressive natural scenery, and a wide range of tourist attractions. With this funding, we are specifically expanding the bike path and making it even more attractive to visitors. In this way, we are strengthening local tourism and showcasing—far beyond the region’s borders—what Mansfeld-Südharz and our home state of Saxony-Anhalt have to offer.”
As a flagship project, the bike trail demonstrates how industrial heritage, tourism, and sustainable infrastructure can be successfully integrated in a region undergoing structural change. A seamless network of bike paths promotes cycling as a climate-friendly alternative to driving. Custom-designed signage and information panels ensure better wayfinding and provide information along the route. At the same time, the bike path enhances the region’s appeal to tourists and supports restaurants, hotels, museums, and other regional attractions.
