The unified municipality of the Hanseatic town of Gardelegen is located in the north-western part of Saxony-Anhalt in the rural Altmark region. It covers an area of 632 m² and comprises 49 districts, with the district of Gardelegen being the political and economic center of the unified municipality.

 

Strategically, Gardelegen in the Altmark district of Salzwedel is very conveniently located on the B71 and B188 federal highways that bypass the town and in the middle between the metropolitan regions of Hamburg, Hanover, Leipzig and Berlin. These cities can be reached in approx. 2 hours (150 km) by car. The state capital Magdeburg and the city of Wolfsburg can be reached in just under an hour.
