Saxony-Anhalt's economic structure is essentially characterized by the close interlinking of business and science. As a result, future-oriented developments quickly reach production maturity. Since 1990, the central German state has enjoyed a steady economic recovery, while at the same time developing into a pioneer of economic transformation.
Saxony-Anhalt is currently undergoing a far-reaching process of structural change that is transforming existing industries and entire markets. In order to achieve the ambitious goal of climate neutrality, innovative solutions for CO2 reduction are required, particularly in energy-intensive industries, for example through the use of green hydrogen. In view of climate change and the looming shortage of raw materials, the energy and resource transition is becoming increasingly important.

The coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the vulnerability of the economy and society Saxony-Anhalt is particularly affected by these disruptive developments: In addition to the structural change associated with the energy transition, demographic change is also presenting the state with major challenges, especially in rural regions. As in the previous innovation strategy, the state will focus its funding activities on the lead markets "Energy, mechanical and plant engineering, resource efficiency", "Health and medicine", "Mobility and logistics", "Chemistry and bioeconomy" and "Food and agriculture". These lead markets continue to represent the areas of specialization of Saxony-Anhalt's economy. The previous cross-sectional areas of "information and communication technologies", "key technologies" and "creative and media industries" will also continue to be taken into account when setting priorities.
Over the last few years, further topics have emerged that provide particular impetus within the key technologies. These are "green hydrogen" on the one hand and "lightweight construction" and "algae biotechnology" on the other, which are of particular importance for Saxony-Anhalt.

As a logistics location, Saxony-Anhalt is centrally integrated into the trans-European transport network. The state is crossed by five highways - the A 2, A 9, A 14, A 38 and A 143 - and thus offers direct connections to the major economic areas in Germany and Europe.
Leipzig/Halle Airport is an important international hub. With unrestricted 24-hour operation 365 days a year, two parallel runways and a continuously growing infrastructure, it is one of the most efficient air freight hubs in Europe. It is the second largest cargo airport in Germany and ranks among the top 10 in Europe.
Saxony-Anhalt is also well positioned in rail transportation: With around 3,100 kilometers of track, the state is one of the regions with the densest rail network in Europe. 76 freight stations as well as central facilities such as the Halle (Saale) and Großkorbetha marshalling yards and the train formation facilities in Magdeburg-Rothensee and Halle (Saale) - the latter with Europe's most modern technology - ensure efficient logistics processes.
The multimodal offering is complemented by an efficient waterway network. The Elbe, Mittelland Canal, Elbe-Havel Canal and the waterway junction near Magdeburg form a central system for inland transportation. The port of Magdeburg serves as an important hinterland hub for the seaports in Wilhelmshaven, Bremerhaven, Hamburg, Lübeck and Rostock.
