Well-connected location for medical technology in Germany - Saxony-Anhalt promotes itself in the USA

Einsfelder: "We are thereby also drawing on our good contacts in Minneapolis and St. Paul."

The Investment and Marketing Corporation Saxony-Anhalt (IMG) is touring the twin cities Minneapolis and St. Paul in the American state of Minnesota from 9 to 13 October. The state’s economic development agency intends to promote the location Saxony-Anhalt for investors and collaborations and thereby expand IMG’s local network at the same time. In addition to numerous corporate visits, participation in the event series “Cluster Opportunities” promoted by Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI), the German agency for foreign trade and location marketing, is the focal point of the week’s activities. Together with healthcare companies and medical technology clusters, GTAI will highlight the German healthcare market and the research landscape in Eastern Germany on site. Other participants will be coming from Berlin/Brandenburg and Saxony.

“Especially in the field of medical technology, Saxony-Anhalt provides integration opportunities in the regional value-added chain due to the close networking of companies among each other, but also with research institutes, universities and industry networks,” explains Thomas Einsfelder, Managing Director of the Investment and Marketing Corporation Saxony-Anhalt. “This is an important reason for the continuous growth which the 75 companies from Saxony-Anhalt and their approximately 2,200 employees have been recording for years,” adds Einsfelder.

The German Federal State of Saxony-Anhalt in the centre of Germany is a traditional location for mechanical engineering; short distances for the close and above all personal exchange between physicians and engineers, but also between other network partners, are uniquely characteristic of the medical technology industry in the state and substantiate the very high innovation potential.

One of the network stakeholders in the state is the STIMULATE research campus, which will be accompanying IMG Saxony-Anhalt on the promotional tour. STIMULATE stands for new and innovative technologies surrounding image-guided minimally invasive methods in the field of medicine. With a close practical relevance, work is ongoing in the optimisation of the methods of examination and treatment - by improving the medical imaging and developing specialist instruments, such as needles and catheters. Image-guided minimally invasive procedures are particularly important in the treatment of strokes and tumours. Partners in the network of collaborations are, inter alia, the Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg, Siemens Healthcare GmbH and a variety of other players in the field of medical technology. The public-private partnership, which is looking for other fellow campaigners around the world, intends to develop into the “German centre for image-guided medicine” in the long run.

IMG Saxony-Anhalt is drawing on its good contacts in Minneapolis and St. Paul with the tour in the USA. In 2010, IMG had already identified the twin cities as one of two key regions in the USA for foreign investments in the field of medical technology. “Due to diverse events on site, in recent years IMG Saxony-Anhalt has managed to establish stable personal networks with trade associations, companies and universities which help to further expand contacts during the current tour and to advertise Saxony-Anhalt,” says Einsfelder. In addition to its concentration of medical technology companies, the Minneapolis/St. Paul region is also characterised by its special affinity to Germany, because a majority of the population has German roots.
