Further information

For Holland, Germany has long been one of the most important trading partners. Saxony-Anhalt has a particular significance for the Netherlands: Prince Johann Georg II of Anhalt-Dessau married Oranien Princess Henriette Catharina in 1659. In the following years, close cultural and economic contacts developed. The city and castle of Oranienbaum were built for Catharina from 1663 in accordance with the plans of Dutch architect Cornelius Ryckwaert. And there is a further Dutch – Saxony-Anhalt root. Juliana, one of the founders of the house of Oranien and ancestor of the royal house of the Netherlands, was born in the Harz region. She first caught sight of the Schloss Stolberg in 1506 and lived there until her 13th year. Even today, her oldest son, Wilhelm von Oranien, is highly distinguished in our neighbouring country as the “Father of the Fatherland” – among other reasons because he freed the Netherlands from Spanish rule in the 16th century.
